Santorini’s history is rich and interesting. The archaeological site of Akrotiri, a city dating back as long as 3.500 years, must be your first stop. In the prehistoric city of Akrotiri a sophisticated civilization has been developed and destroyed by the massive volcanic eruption of 1.600 B.C., the one that gave Santorini its current shape. Once in Akrotiri, you will witness a city with two storey buildings, squares and an impressive system for water supply. The magnificent and fabulous frescoes from Akrotiri are exhibited in the Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira.
The next important phase of Santorini’s history occurred at the top of the mountain Mesa Vouno, just above the villages of Kamari and Perissa. At the 8th century B.C. Spartan settlers built their town where today temples, a theatre and Agora awaits for their modern times visitors. The view from the Ancient Thera, as it is called, is amazing. Santorini has many sites worth visiting but we will try to short list to the most important ones just for our guests. Starting from Fira, the capital of Santorini, you will be enchanted by the marvellous views to the caldera, the mansions, the cave houses and you will enjoy shopping and your coffee or lunch to the many restaurants and cafes! From Fira head north to the picturesque villages of Firostefani and Imerovigli to enjoy more views to the caldera, the volcano, the sea and the nearby islands. Moving towards over the north part of the island where the magnificent village of Oia lies; the architecture, the ambiance and the views will make you feel amazed and thrilled!
Discover also the village of Pyrgos. A castle-city in a privilege location with beautiful views all over the island, mansions and picturesque cafes at squares! We have already talked about the beach of Perivolos where Marillia Village is located and for the black sand, the crystal clear waters and the water sport facilities that you will find across the beach. If you move towards the rock at the end of the beach you will be passing by the natural continuation of Perivolos, the beach of Perissa. Close to Marillia Village, less than 2 km., is the volcanic beach of Vlychada. Enjoy swimming in the black sandy beach of Vlychada and take a stroll to little fisherman harbour. In Santorini you will find plenty of organized beaches, Kamari for example, and numerous of natural shores to swim at.
The products of Santorini are unique! The volcanic soil of the island gives to the products a delicious flavour. For example the fava, a type of beans, has been cultivated on the island for more than 3.000 years and belongs to a variety found only in Santorini. The cherry tomatoes of Santorini have a distinctive shape and flavour. Small sized with hard skin but with an “explosive” taste as you bite one or more. In Santorini do not miss tasting the white aubergine, caper in salads and other dishes that you will find in the restaurants of Santorini.
The wines of Santorini are also really special. The long tradition to wine making in Santorini lead up to today as more than 10 wineries are operating on the island. For hiking lovers the most famous route is the one starting from the Fira and after two and a half hours walking mostly at the caldera cliffs you reach the gorgeous village of Oia. Other routes start from the villages of Pyrgos and Emporeio for various but beautiful spots on the island.
